Camera Obscura 6

This was my sixth Camera obscura installation. It was located at ‘Het Atelier’ in Bruges, Belgium from 01/12/2022 to 14/01/2023.

During my residency at ‘Het Atelier’ I transformed the entire space into a camera obscura, building on the previous installation, Camera Obscura 5. My aim was to create a space where visitors could reflect on the impact of technology in our lives while taking a moment to pause and chat.

The visitors’ reactions to the darkness and the gradual formation of the camera image were fascinating. Many visitors were fascinated by how the installation worked and were surprised by its simplicity. Interestingly, several visitors commented on the lack of darkness in Belgium and how it’s rare for people to sit in darkness at home.

Children had the most touching reactions being a bit afraid of the dark at first but when that passed they were totally amazed and eager to try it at home.

Another visitor, a teacher, quietly said: “I had completely forgotten how amazingly simple and wonderful a this is. I think I know what to do next week with my pupils in art class.”

Isometric view of Camera Obscura 6. I used the whole space of ‘Het Atelier’ for this project. Measuring approximately 8 x 10 m it’s my largest Camera Obscura installation to date.
